Sink into our mountainside spa to watch the stars come out followed by a nightcap by the large open fire. With nature as your only neighbour, relax into the complete privacy of the hut, finding a sheltered spot in or outdoors to take in the majesty of our views. Watch the first rays of sunlight rise out of the Pacific Ocean and disappear in the evening behind the majestic snow capped Kaikōura mountains.
It’s about the simple things in life
Once a working shepherds hut, we have lovingly and respectfully restored this hideaway to offer you rustic luxury at its best. A large covered outdoor kitchen area with all the modern amenities and an extensive dining table provides a truly unique setting to a world class outlook. The floorboards pulled from the historic Wadi Nimrin woolshed have been restored and relayed at Matai Peak lodge, bearing the patina of years gone by with shearing hand pieces falling to the floor and softened by the natural lanolin from wool. The walls of solid macrocarpa milled from the farm and have been reconfigured to make the most of the sweeping coastal views looking south to Banks Peninsula and north beyond Kaikōura to the Clarence river.

A remote hideaway that offers guests rustic luxury at its best with sweeping coastal views looking south to Banks Peninsula, Christchurch and north beyond Kaikōura. Witness the first rays of sunlight rise out of the Pacific Ocean whilst sipping your morning brew in the king sized bed before a luxurious outdoor bath supplied with water from a natural spring located in the bush below. Explore Kaikoura by day with Christchurch Heli before sitting by the roaring outdoor fireplace in the evening with a warm glass of red as the sun disappears behind the majestic snow caped Kaikōura mountains. Finish your day soaking in the outdoor spa pool under a clear night sky and stargaze with no light pollution.
Stay at Matai Peak
The lodge has capacity of up to 4 guests. Includes a master bedroom with a king size bed and a queen bed in the living room, a well serviced open-plan bathroom with a torrential shower and luxurious outdoor bath. The Lodge is completely self-contained, includes a sitting room with an indoor fireplace and a covered outdoor kitchen and dining area. Accessible by 4WD and helicopter, two helicopter pads available for guests arrivals and departures.
