Fiji’s original adults-only escape, where overwater bures rest above a protected lagoon on Malolo Island.
Likuliku was Fiji’s first adults-only resort to introduce authentic overwater bures, and it remains one of the few built with genuine reverence for the land it sits on. Forty-five bures, thirty-five beachfront, ten suspended above the reef, are constructed from Vesi hardwood, hand-carved timber and woven magi magi panels by artisans from the remote Lau Group. There is no manufactured resort gloss here; the architecture, the lagoon and the stories that surround them are the authentic drawcard.
The Location
Likuliku sits on Malolo Island in the Mamanuca group, a 25-kilometre transfer from Nadi International Airport by boat or seaplane. The resort takes its name from the lagoon it borders, Likuliku means “calm waters” in the Malolo dialect, a natural, current-free anchorage that has sheltered vessels since long before tourism arrived. The lagoon and its surrounding reef form a protected marine sanctuary, giving guests uncommonly still, clear water for swimming and snorkelling directly from their bure. Malolo itself carries deep significance in Fijian oral history, long regarded as the island where the sun comes to rest at day’s end.
The Resort
The resort’s design draws directly from Fijian tradition. Its central building takes the form of a Fijian canoe house, with soaring thatched ceilings and a mix of natural materials that anchor the whole property in place. The thirty-five beachfront bures sit directly on the sand with lagoon access, twenty-nine with their own plunge pool and all with a private courtyard and outdoor shower. Ten overwater bures extend out over the reef on individual platforms, each with a private balcony leading straight into the ocean, a configuration still rare in Fiji. Every bure carries the same architectural integrity: local hardwood floors, hand-carved window pelmets and thatching woven by artisans brought in specifically for the craft. Because Likuliku is adults-only, the resort has been designed without the compromises multi-generational properties require, bars, dining rooms and pool decks built for quiet rather than activity.
The Experience
Dining runs across two distinct restaurants. Fijiana is the signature space, open-air and looking out over the lagoon, where Executive Chef Gregory Llewellyn builds daily-changing menus around local seafood and Pacific produce. Saluwaki offers a newer, small-plate Asian tapas concept for guests wanting a different rhythm to their evening, and poolside service covers wood-fired pizza, burgers and salads grown in the resort’s own garden. Beyond the table, Likuliku’s activities lean into its setting and its history: snorkelling the house reef, guided visits to sacred sites around the island, a garden tour focused on sustainable practice, and a weekly rotation of cultural evenings - a Fijian cultural show on Fridays, fire dance performance on Mondays, and a traditional kava ceremony on Tuesdays. For deeper immersion, the resort can arrange visits to the nearby village, and a private-island escape to Mociu for couples wanting a day entirely to themselves. Tatadra Spa and a small gymnasium round out the more sedentary end of a stay built, above all, around slowing down.
