Capella Sydney: Award-Winning Heritage Luxury Hotel in the Heart of Sydney
A 1912 sandstone landmark reborn as Australia’s highest-ranked hotel, with 192 rooms and suites, a moonlit spa and a 20-metre pool beneath heritage skylights.
For more than a century, the Edwardian Baroque sandstone walls of the former Department of Education building have filled an entire city block in Sydney’s historic Sandstone Precinct. Designed by Government Architect George McRae, also responsible for the Queen Victoria Building, the northern half opened in 1912 and the southern wing followed in 1930. After a seven-year restoration by Make Architects, with interiors by BAR Studio, it reopened in 2023 as Capella Sydney, the first Australian outpost of Capella Hotels and Resorts. In 2026 it became the only Sydney hotel to hold Two MICHELIN Keys, and was named No. 16 in The World’s 50 Best Hotels and Best Hotel in Oceania for the second year running. For travellers seeking a luxury hotel in Sydney with real depth of story, there is nowhere quite like it.
The Location
Capella Sydney faces Farrer Place in the heart of the CBD, about 400 metres from the harbour. Circular Quay and the Museum of Contemporary Art are a short stroll away, the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge are each around a 12-minute walk, and the Royal Botanic Garden lies just beyond the neighbouring heritage streets. The site carries deep significance: it sits in the area of first contact between the Gadigal people and the First Fleet, a history the hotel honours through commissioned artwork and storytelling.
The hotel’s Capella Culturists act as personal guides to the city. Their signature two-hour walking tour leads from the hotel through the laneways of The Rocks, telling the stories of the building and the precinct, and they can arrange anything from gallery visits to a sail across the harbour on a classic yacht.
The Hotel
The 192 rooms and suites reveal the building’s original features, from high ceilings and arched windows to restored timber and marble, paired with curated artwork, pillow-top beds dressed in custom Italian Frette linen and Bamford amenities. The 157 guestrooms, from Deluxe and Premier to Tower and Skyline Rooms, average more than 50m², making them among the most generous in the city. Twenty-two Deluxe and Skyline Suites add separate living spaces, walk-in wardrobes and deep-soaking baths, with the Skyline Suites offering apartment-style layouts and sweeping cityscape views.
The four Prestige Suites are the hotel’s most remarkable spaces. The 235m² Capella Suite unfolds like a private residence, with separate living and dining rooms, a butler’s pantry and a bedroom looking east over the Royal Botanic Garden towards Woolloomooloo. The Liberty Suite spreads across two loft-style levels with floor-to-ceiling windows and harbour glimpses, while the Farrer and Macquarie Suites, at 105m² and 118m² respectively, pair heritage detailing with sculptural bathtubs and generous dressing areas. Prestige Suite guests enjoy access to The Living Room and its daily Capella Rituals, along with exclusive 24-hour access to the wellness centre.
On level six, Auriga Spa takes its inspiration from the phases of the moon, offering treatments designed around renewal, balance and connection. Its centrepiece is a 20-metre heated indoor pool set beneath the building’s restored heritage light wells, surrounded by a vitality pool, sauna, steam room, ice fountain, yoga platform and fitness centre.
The Experience
Dining is anchored on the ground floor. Brasserie 1930, named for the year the southern wing opened, is an Art Deco dining room of marble, checked floors and leather banquettes, serving modern brasserie classics built on produce from small-batch Australian farmers and an extensive wine list. Aperture, set in the building’s original central courtyard beneath a striking light installation, flows from all-day dining into one of Sydney’s most celebrated afternoon teas. McRae Bar, named after the building’s architect, reimagines the Victorian drinking den, with cocktails built around Australian spirits and seasonal fruit.
Each evening the hotel hosts Echoes of Eternity, a cocktail ritual paying tribute to Arthur Stace, the Sydney street poet who chalked the word “Eternity” across the city’s pavements for decades. It is one of many small, storied touches, alongside Fluidform Pilates sessions streamed in-room and a Little Stars programme for younger guests, that make Capella Sydney feel both grand and deeply personal. Adjoining the hotel, The Lands by Capella offers reimagined heritage ballrooms for celebrations of up to 420 guests.
