A Guide to Queenstown Ski Season

Posted By on

NEWS FLASH!!! New Zealand borders are finally open and you no longer require a pre-departure Covid test, but more importantly, the powder gods have answered all our prayers! With the heaviest snow fall that many have seen in decades across Queenstown in the last 10 days, it can only mean one thing – we’re in for a stellar ski season!

Touch of Spice have spent the last 17 years exploring all that our beautiful backyard has to offer - finding the kiwis who know how to serve it up in a truly epic style. We know that not everyone can know the insider secrets, but we thought we’d help you in planning your winter escape with a quick guide to the Queenstown Ski Fields.

Queenstown, South Island, New Zealand

First things first, Queenstown, located in the South Island of New Zealand, is surrounded by pristine lakes, towering peaks, world-class wineries, adventure activities, luxury accommodation, and of course – epic snow experiences.

With four ski-fields on your doorstep, there’s something to suit every skill level. Whether you’re a beginner looking for some private lessons, a pro looking to venture to untouched terrain on a day of heli-skiing or boarding, or just looking to get in on the snowy action, you can have it all in Queenstown. Touch of Spice can organize all your ski hire in-house at your private villa the day before you hit the slopes so once you arrive at the base building, you’re ready to hit the slopes. Now the choice is yours…

1. Coronet Peak, Queenstown – NZ Ski

Queenstown's local ski area, Coronet Peak is the easiest and quickest field to access by road being only a 20-minute drive from Queenstown CBD.  Explore a huge variety of terrain with epic views over the Wakatipu basin. As the home of Night Ski, Coronet Peak lights it up from 4-9pm for more skiing after the sun goes down, its Après Ski, Queenstown style. Make sure you stop by Cargo by Gantley’s on the way home – perfectly placed at the foot of the mountain, Cargo is the perfect pit stop for an Apres ski beer by the outdoor fire.

2. Remarkables Ski Field, Queenstown – NZ Ski

A higher peak than Coronet, Remarkables Ski Field is approximately a 35-minute drive from Queenstown CBD to the base building. If the road isn’t for you, let us know and we can organize a private heli to drop you there in minutes. Home to sun-drenched chutes, seven parks and a massive learner’s area, the Remarkables offers terrain and facilities that suit first-timers to seasoned skiers and snow boarders. On your return to Queenstown, stop by Altitude Brewery (based at the Marina) for a local brew, or if it’s wine you’re after, stop by The Sherwood and get cozy by the indoor or outdoor fire.

3.Cardrona Alpine Resort – Cardrona

Cardrona Alpine Resort is New Zealand’s most popular ski area, attracting all kinds of snow enthusiasts – from beginners & families to Olympic & X Games athletes. Approximately a 40-minute drive from Queenstown, up and over the Crown Range (or only a few minutes in a heli), Cardrona offers the perfect mix of terrain to suit everyone. Spread across the mountain, there’s multiple spots to stop for a mulled wine or coffee to heat up, and some of the most stunning views to take in as you shred down the slopes. A visit to Cardrona isn’t complete without a stop at the Cardrona Hotel – once you see it, you’ll understand why!

4. Soho Basin – Cardrona

Soho Basin offers a snow experience like no other field in the region. This private ski area offers pristine high-country terrain, world-class views, and gourmet dining in an atmosphere of relaxed and understated luxury with a private cat-ski. Soho Basin combines the fun and adventure of an off-piste alpine experience with the ease and creature comforts of luxury ski resorts. End the day with a private wine tasting at Amisfield Winery – one of Queenstown’s finest wineries and bistro.
